Political Satire
Stories about Political figures are all over our news, in
our newspapers and magazines, and it is hard to not be at least a little aware
of what is going on in the world of politics even if you don’t really care
about it. Most of the things we hear are
serious stories, some about pleasant things some about not so fantastic things,
but most are serious since the vast majority of people take politics pretty
seriously. However, not everything out there about politics is serious.
Political cartoons are designed to make people laugh, to walk for a moment on
the lighter side of the political areana. Granted, they often carry a serious
message or are trying to bring to the attention of the public a very serious
issue, but they are done in a humorous manor.
Political cartoons fall into the realm of satire, more specifically called political satire. They help people who normally avoid as much as they can about politics find some common ground with those who follow the politics religiously. Satire is a common literary genre that often features strong irony or sarcasm. However, parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy and double entendre are often also a part of this type of writing. Political cartoons are a form of political satire which, not surprisingly, keeps its focus on politics alone. These cartoons are quite popular and have been around for many, many years. They are an important part of American history and still hold an important place in our world today. Many have found their way into all of today’s major newspapers and magazines, and there are numerous online sites that feature daily political cartoons.
